Just a little bit of background… on Sasha… we warn you, it’s a bit boring, but we already got you smiling… Sasha will soon share his tale of adventure in his next submission!
My work at the Chernigov Children’s Group Home began with a
conversation with a local doctor and the personnel who work directly
with this group of children. This clarified the diagnoses, clinical
pictures and referrals for massage therapy as well as whether or not
any specific methods were employed. Once I ascertained the absence of
any contraindications in the use of massage, a decision was made to
begin trial sessions (because an understanding of the
psycho-physiological effects on the body as a whole allows for further
reasoned actions), with the intention of having an effect on the
entire body without singling out reflex areas. Having planned to
perform 5 full-body massage sessions, but having encountered a lack of
psychological readiness on the part of the children toward the
procedures and manipulations, without the ability to explain to the
children the benefits, due to their inability to speak, I made the
decision to employ an anti-stress method, that is, the general purpose
massage included a stress relieving component. In this case, the
number of trial sessions had to be increased because massage is, first
and foremost, a collection of methods of mechanical effects in doses,
and an overdosing may have negative psychological physiological
effects.
After 5-6 sessions the children adapted, became less irritable to the
touch and more active overall, that is, they displayed an improvement
in their metabolic activity, blood and lymph fluid circulation
(through higher body temperature and a healthier coloring of the skin,
observed on limbs not involved in the massage. The regulation of the
vascular tone on the periphery depends not only on the mechanical
effects, but also on substances such as acetylcholine, histamine,
which confirms the neuro-humoral effects of massage on the blood
vessels) and also in all biochemical processes of the body,
consequently there was also an improvement in their sleep. After 8-10
sessions the method will incorporate passive movements of the upper
body. The effects of these manipulations cause a transformation of
mechanical energy (manipulation) into the nerve reaction energy, which
promotes complex reflex reactions. Reflex dose effects will increase
the muscle tone, grow the electrical activity of the muscles, change
oxidation-recovery processes and an exchange of gases…
